Full Description
----------------
View-Two is a utility program that lets you view (browse) two text
files simultaneously. Both files are visible together, each in its
own "window" (the screen is split vertically) so you can easily do an
I-E-B-EYEBALL on the two files.
For example, to view 2 files, say, MYFILE.DOC and MYFILE.BAK, just type
"VIEW2 MYFILE.DOC MYFILE.BAK". If you enter the letter "C" after the second
file name, the program will go right into the compare function (see below).
You may enter an "*" in either the filename or extension name of the
SECOND filename (but not both!) to retain the value from the first
parameter. For example...
- "View2 MYFILE.DOC *.BAK" (equivalent to :View2 MYFILE.DOC MYFILE.BAK")
- "View2 MYFILE.DOC TEST.*" (equivalent to :View2 MYFILE.DOC TEST.DOC")
If you enter only 1 filename on the command line, it will appear in
both windows.
If you do not enter any file on the command line, you will be brought to
the scrolling directory screen (see Directory Lister below).
The Help Line
-------------
The bottom line of the display screen lists several function keys and their
related functions. This is the Help Line. If you are using a MOUSE, you can
"click" on the Help Line to perform the function as if you had pressed the
function key.
Which Mouse Button ?
--------------------
The LEFT one. All mouse operations are done with the LEFT button!
The "Active" Window
-------------------
Hitting the ENTER key will let you alternate between the two windows. The
"active" window will have its text in the bright (yellow) color.
If you are using a MOUSE, you can "click" anywhere within a window to
make that window active.
Resizing the Windows
--------------------
The windows can be resized vertically by using the left and right arrow
keys. If you are using a MOUSE, you can hold the Left Button down on the
center divider, then move (drag) the MOUSE left or right, and release the
button.
Scrolling in the Windows
------------------------
Text within each window can be scrolled left and right (using F5 and F6),
or by holding down the DHIFT KEY and using the Left and Right arrow keys.
If you are using a MOUSE, you can "click" on the "F5=Left" and "F6=Rght"
literals on the Help Line for the same result.
You may scroll up and down using the arrow keys (single line), or PgUp
and PgDn. The HOME key takes you to the Top of the file; the END key takes
you to the end of the file.
If you are using a MOUSE, you can "click" on the "HEUP+" literal on the Help
Line. Clicking on the "H" is equivalent to hitting the (H)ome key, the "E"
for the (E)nd key, "U" for PgUp and "D" for PgDn.
Clicking on the "+" key brings up another submenu of additional functions
(explained below).
Searching
---------
Hit the F2 key to search for a character string. If found in the active
window, it will be marked with an "arrow line". Repeated searches on the
same string are performed by hitting F2 again, followed by enter.
If you are using a MOUSE, you can "click" on the "F2" literal. You can then
"click" anywhere other than the "OK" button to invoke an on-screen
Mouse - Keyboard, which you can "type" in the search string by "clicking"
on the desired letters. Repeat searches with the same search string use
the "OK" button.
If the search string is found in a column not currently within the display
window, the item will be shifted over to make the search string visible on
the screen. Hitting any key will automatically shift the active window
back to whatever column it was set for.
Compare
-------
There F3 key will start the compare function. It starts with the top line in
each window and compares the two files line by line, until the end of
either file is reached, or a difference is detected.
While comparing, you can hit the "W" key (or "click" on the "W" letter) to
put the compare into "Warp Drive", or full speed. It only redraws the
screen a page at a time (versus a line at a time), making the compare run
even faster.
Compare Options
---------------
You may alter the Compare Options (Shift F1, or "click" on the "+" literal
and select Compare Options).
This enables you to restrict the compare to a range of columns. You can also
state two strings to be equivalent. For example, if you had 2 files that
we identical except one had several occurrences of the word "MIKE" and the
other had the name "PAUL" instead, you could make "MIKE" in file 1
equivalent to "PAUL" in file 2.
Other Functions
---------------
F1 - Minimal Online Help
F4 - Makes Both windows active, so that scrolling commands are
effective on both windows.
F9 - Invokes the Directory Lister screen
Shift+F2 - Makes carriage control and line feed combinations "visible",
displaying them as a small triangle.
Shift+F3 - toggles the lines per screen between 25, 43, and 50 line modes.
(Note that the compare is actually FASTER in 25 line mode).
The Directory Lister
--------------------
This screen is displayed if you do not enter a file name when starting
View2. IT may also be accessed by hitting (or "clicking") the F9 key.
The function keys are described on the left of the screen, and may be
"clicked" on if you are using a mouse.
In addition to scrolling the list with the usual Up, Down, PgUp, PgDn,
Home, and End keys, (and Scroll Bar if using a MOUSE), you may hit a
letter on the keyboard and the light bar will jump to the first file
beginning with that letter.
F3 allows you to enter a file mask, restricting the list of files to those
that match the mask (such as *.BAK).
F4 allows you to enter the file name directory.
F6 allows you to change to another directory.
Remember, you can "type" in the parameters with the MOUSE by clicking on
other than the "OK" button.
Exiting the Program
-------------------
To leave the program, hit the escape (ESC) key if on the file display
screen. Hit F5 if on the directory lister screen.
